The scienceAnd the Benefits of Dream Interpretation
May 19, 2023 Guest Author
Sigmund Freud famously sd that the interpretation of dreams is the royal road to a knowledge of the unconscious activities of the mind. Freud, along with Carl Jung and Fritz Perls, saw dream interpretation as an essential aspect of psychotherapy. They all believed that dreams could expose unconscious desires and issues.
For therapists, dream interpretation can provide significant benefits during sessions. New patients or those unfamiliar with therapy might feel hesitant to openly discuss their concerns. However, asking about their dreams encourages conversation, establishing rapport between the patient and therapist. This avenue not only facilitates better connection but also helps uncover latent issues.
Dreams have always played a pivotal role in history. They are among the earliest recorded stories, with countless references found in religions such as Christianity, Islam, and Judsm. For instance, the inception and of Jesus’ life were marked by dreams: An angel appeared to Joseph in a dream informing him that Mary's child was divine, and Pontius Pilate washed his hands upon sentencing Jesus.
Throughout history, dreams have fascinated people, remarked Frederick L. Coolidge, a psychology professor at the University of Colorado College of Letters, Arts Sciences. They're integral parts of our early narratives.
Yet, over time, the teaching of dream interpretation has diminished in master’s and doctoral programs due to the proliferation of questionable dream interpretation books that oversimplify meanings based on common elements found in dreams.
There are so many absurd, nonscientific 'dream interpretation' books, Coolidge noted. These books categorize all instances of a particular element in a dream into one meaning, lacking any explanatory framework for why those interpretations might differ among individuals.
However, the roots of psychology can still be connected to dream interpretation, and trning future therapists to interpret dreams could benefit both new and long-standing patients alike. By asking about their dreams, therapists may establish rapport with patients who are often grappling with chronic unhappiness. Therapies, generally based on the premise that awareness is curative, offer a pathway for individuals seeking resolution.
Dream therapy can be an effective tool to uncover the roots of their distress, Coolidge posited. Awareness is therapeutic, and dreams provide insight into our problems.
Frederick L. Coolidge has been recognized with three teaching awards, including the University of Colorado Presidential Teaching Scholar title and the UCCS Letters, Arts Sciences Annual Outstanding Research and Creative Works Award. He's also a recipient of multiple Fulbright Fellowship Awards. His latest book, The Science of Dream Interpretation, is avlable at all major bookselling platforms.
